In March 1944, the Dutch underground gave 21-year-old Fred Angress, a colleague of Walter Süskind in the Hollandsche Schouwburg since 1943, the address of Gerald and Nelly Bom. The Boms lived on the second floor of a two-apartment building in Amsterdam and they provided Fred with permanent shelter in a little room on the top floor of the building. The Boms not only provided Fred with ration cards but also with friendship and love. In return, on many occasions, Fred took care of the Boms’ three-year-old son when they were out of the house. Fred himself was not allowed to leave the apartment during his entire time in hiding. He was not a financial burden to his hosts because he earned a monthly income through the sale of his parent’s lingerie store. In his testimony to Yad Vashem, Fred wrote: “I was completely isolated from the neighbors and had contact with no one except Nelly’s mother, Johanna Fey*. Nelly Bom and her husband were highly intelligent people, very courageous, warm-hearted, ready to fight for their beliefs at the risk of their own lives.” In February 1945, food was so scarce that the Bom family moved in with Nelly’s sister in the countryside. Fred found shelter with Nelly's mother, even though she was already hiding a number of Jews.
On January 1, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Gerald Bom and his wife, Petronella Bom-Fey (later Nelly Gispen), as Righteous Among the Nations.
