After fleeing Germany in 1937, Siegfried Gottschalk worked as a butcher in Nijmegen, Gelderland. In 1942, one of his customers, Mr. Bisschops, offered to take him, his wife, Carola, and their two young sons into hiding. He gave Siegfried the keys to his own house and the houses of his married daughters, Johanna van de Boogaard-Bisschops* and Wilhelmina Mulder-Bisschops. On November 17, 1942, Siegfried took his family to Wilhemina Mulder, whose husband was working as a merchant marine officer in England. There the Gottschalks hid in a small room in the attic where they had to stay all the time. Other than a few family members, nobody knew about them. They had to manage without forged identity papers or food coupons. Wilhelmina, like her father, was a socialist, whose political principals motivated her to rescue the Jewish family. In the spring of 1943, another sister of Wilhelmina’s married and the newlyweds came to live with her. The young husband told an outsider about the hidden fugitives and, on June 5, 1944, the authorities were informed. The Gottschalk children were immediately taken to Rotterdam and the parents hid at the sister’s, Johanna van de Boogaard, also in Nijmegen.
On July 20, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Wilhelmina Theresia Mulder-Bisschops as Righteous Among the Nations.
