While hiding with Wilhelmina Mulder-Bisschops* in Nijmegen, the Gottschalk family was betrayed and had to move immediately. The Resistance took the two Gottschalk sons to Rotterdam. Their parents, Siegfried and Carola Gottschalk, were brought to the home of Wilhelmina’s sister, Johanna van de Boogaard, in Nijmegen, Gelderland. Widowed and living with her four children, Johanna was a devout Catholic, motivated to help by her religious convictions. Both she and her children understood the risks involved in their actions. After the war, the Gottschalks maintained close ties with their rescuers.
On July 20, 1999, Yad Vashem recognized Johanna van de Bogaard-Bisschops as Righteous Among the Nations.
