He was married and had five small children. Henk was socially involved with the less fortunate, and joined the Communist Party. During the war, he became active in the Communist resistance movement, starting out by distributing their illegal newspaper, de Waarheid, and various like-minded pamphlets. In the summer of 1942, with the onset of the deportations of the Jews, Henk learned up close about the ever-increasing anti-Jewish measures from some of his colleagues in the resistance group. He then decided to become more active and joined the artists resistance group of Gerrit van der Veen*. This group was heavily involved in activities to assist Jews, such as falsifying documents and finding hiding addresses. That summer, Henk was approached by Louis Hoepelman, a Jewish teacher and friend from Communist resistance circles. Hoepelman, in his late twenties, needed an urgent hiding address. Thus, Henk took him, to the home of Petronella de Boer*, his companion at the time and with whom he had two small children. He also took another friend, Jo Overste, a musician, b.1906, to her home to hide. Petronella, despite her two children, willingly cooperated in his offer to help both men, despite the personal risk to all. A few months later, Henk was betrayed and traced to Petronellas home. On November 18, 1942, the SD arrested Hoepelman, Overste, as well as Henriët. Hoepelman and Overste were sent to the Westerbork transit-camp and deported to Auschwitz, where they were murdered. Henk was taken to an Amsterdam prison from where he managed to escape the next day. He subsequently continued with his resistance activities from various hiding addresses. In December 1944, while on his way to Putten (prov. Gelderland), Henk was caught and arrested again. This time he was taken to the Amersfoort camp for political prisoners, from where he was transferred to the Neuengamme concentration camp in Germany on February 2nd, 1945. With the approach of the Allies, the inmates were transferred in early May 1945. Henk was put on the steamship, Cap Arcona, in nearby Neustadt (Holstein), with the intention of sinking it at sea. It was erroneously bombed by the Allies on May 3 and Henk Henriët was instantly killed. On August 15, 2004, Hendricus Adrianus Henriët was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. |
