Chava Bornstein (later Chava Leesha Rose), a Jewish nurse who posed as the gentile woman Liesje Bos, was an underground activist working and was supplied with
forged identity papers for Jews in hiding. Chava was also a members of the so-called Lex Group in Leiden led by Alexander (Lex) Bernard, who never received any monetary compensation for his work. The group helped Jews who wanted to go into hiding and published the illegal newsletter Strijdend Nederland (“The Fighting Netherlands”). In her testimony to Yad Vashem Chava wrote: “Lex helped hundreds of people in hiding, maybe more.”
On January 31, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Alexander Maximiliaan Gerardus Bernard as Righteous Among the Nations.
