On September 29, 1942, when Dewora Cohn (later Herz-Cohn) was seven years old, she was taken to live with Johanna Marie Barends and Cornelia de Jong in Heerenveen, Friesland, where she was passed off as Johanna’s niece, Doortje Barends. Dewora’s parents both died in an extermination camp and, after the war, a court awarded custody of her to Johanna and Cornelia rather than to a surviving aunt and uncle. Dewora stayed with them until she was 18, supported by her father’s estate. Johanna and Cornelia brought her up as a Protestant, but, as they had promised Dewora’s father, never had her baptized.
On January 4, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Johanna Marie Barends and Cornelia de Jong as Righteous Among the Nations.
