Jo and Anne were already hiding a Jewish boy named Yehuda Locker when they invited a Jewish couple Yitzhak and Rivka Cohen, who had been hiding with friends but had been forced to leave, to hide with them too. The Cohens stayed with the Bakkers for nine months but asked to leave as the danger increased, but not before Jo found them an alternative hiding place in the nearby village of Gendt. Jo and Anne Bakker later took in another six Jews. The Cohens remained in contact with the Bakkers even after they left, recalling in their testimony to Yad Vashem: "They did not want to accept any money, so we paid just the daily cost of living, never more than our personal needs." The neighbors, who were like family, knew that the Bakkers were hiding Jews. On March 15, 1966, Yad Vashem recognized Anne Bakker and his wife, Jo Bakker, as Righteous Among the Nations.
