He was the youngest of the six children of Abraham and Anna Klynhamer. When the Germans started deporting the Dutch Jews, Abraham Klynhamer was arrested and deported. Sonnys siblings were also arrested and deported, and Sonnys mother had to make a terribly difficult decision: whether she should send her son into hiding, without knowing what would become of him or whether she would see him again, or risk their being deported together. She choose to send him into hiding. Sonny was sheltered by Abraham (Bram) Hessels (b. 1910) and his wife, Francine Oudshoorn (b. 1911), in Utrecht. He was fair haired, and he received a false name (Gerard Brouwer) and could visit the local primary school in Utrecht. Abraham Hessels was a resistance worker who, besides hiding people, was very active in the illegal press. He was arrested and deported but managed to jump out of the train. Thanks to a brave fellow resistance worker who provided him with false identity papers, Abraham Hessels was able to continue his resistance activities under an assumed name. Toward the end of the war, Francine Hessels became ill. A new hiding place had to be found for Sonny. He was taken by a farm family, but he had a hard time there. After the war Sonny was sent to an orphanage in Amsterdam. There he learned that his family had perished, except for two of his sisters. When his sister Jannie left Holland for Canada in 1954, Sonny followed her and started a new life on his own. His name was changed to John. He married his wife, Mary, and they had four children. Eleven days after the last child married, he died. In her testimony to Yad Vashem, Sonnys wife wrote about the Hessels: There was of course a great danger that Sonny might say something about his background to the wrong person, with dire consequences for them all, but these wonderful people took that chance. On March 3, 2015, Yad Vashem recognized Abraham and Francine (Oudshoorn) Hessels as Righteous Among the Nations. |
