By autumn 1943 Iet van Dijk, a member of the Amsterdam Student Group* (ASG), brought Rachel Schrijver, born on September 6, 1942, from her parents to her contact, Talje Gerritsma-Bruins*, who then had her transferred to the home of the van der Werf-de Boer (later Bootsma-de Boer) family in Burgwerd, Friesland. Petronella van der Werf-de Boer, a widow aged 37, lived on a farm, called the Djiplan, with her four young children and Johannes van der Werf*, the then unmarried brother of her deceased husband. The farm was located off the village road and unannounced visitors could be spotted in time for any people in hidding to take cover. Baby Rachel was provided with a false evacuation card from Rotterdam, under the name of Martina (Matti) Haagens. Rachel was soon joined at this hiding place by 17-year-old Lenie Kokernoot (later Monteiro), also from Amsterdam. The brother of Talje Gerritsma-Bruins and Mr. Koopmans, who were being sought by the German authorities, then joined the Jewish girls at the hideout. These four fugitives were permanently sheltered at the van der Werf-de Boer farm until the end of the war. In addition, a number of other Jews as well as several evacuees from Limburg temporarily hid at the Djiplan. Towards the end of the war, the farm was also used at night as a drop-off for weapons. Petronella treated both Lenie and Rachel like her own children, giving them much love, care, and support and there was always a pleasant atmosphere on the Djiplan farm. Petronella and her brother-in-law never received any money for hiding or caring for their lodgers. After the war, Petronella and Johannes put a notice in the Jewish press to try and find the parents of Matti. When, some time later, they discovered that Rachel’s parents had not survived the war, the child was invited to stay with Petronella who, together with her brother-in-law, was given custody of her. Rachel grew up on Djiplan with Petronella, who later married Mr. Bootsma.
On May 28, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Petronella A. Bootsma-de Boer and Johannes Antonius van der Werf as Righteous Among the Nations.
