Hendrik-Jan and Henriette were members of the Vrije Groepen den Haag (The Hague Free Groups), an organization that took care of about 300 Jews. While in hiding, Bea, an author, together with her husband, Wim, who had been in the printing business before the war, and Leo Schatz, an artist also being hidden by members of the The Hague Free Groups, managed to publish a number of childrens books illegally. These were sold throughout the war and the money earned was used to purchase ration cards and other necessary items. Bea stayed with Hendrik-Jan and Henriette for two years, until the liberation in May 1945. (See also Weerheijm, Louis and Johanna). On June 3, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrik-Jan ten Brink and his wife, Henriette ten Brink-Muylwijk, as Righteous Among the Nations |
