Aantekeningen: | Last Name: Boterenbrood First Name: Thomas Date of Birth: 28/07/1914 Date of death: 26/01/1996 Rescuer's fate: survived Nationality: THE NETHERLANDS Gender: Male Place during the war: Nijkerk, Gelderland, The Netherlands Rescue Place: Nijkerk, Gelderland, The Netherlands Rescue mode: Hiding File number: File from the Collection of the Righteous Among the Nations Department (M.31.2/1117) In his testimony, Jacob Nihom recalled that Thomas Boterenbrood, then aged 80, hid him in his home in Nijkerk, Gelderland. Thomas also sheltered two other Jews during the course of the war and his married children, who lived nearby, hid a further 18 Jews, all of whom survived the war. The testimony relating to the Boterenbrood family is just one of many brief references to people who remain all but anonymous despite the fact that they seriously risked their lives during the war. Such brave, upright people were willing to sacrifice all they held dear in their effort to save those being persecuted for no other reason than that they were Jews or were unwilling to comply with the cruel measures imposed by the occupiers. On January 16, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Thomas Boterenbrood as Righteous Among the Nations. |
