Over the course of 1942, as the restrictions on Jews increased and the deportations began, Aron realized that it was imperative for him to find a hiding place in order to survive. He was put in contact with Reverend van Dam in Nijemirdum, Friesland, where he was given the address of a wealthy local farmer. However, when the farmer discovered that Aron had arrived without food coupons he was not interested in helping him. Thus, Aron returned to van Dam, who sent him to Gosse and Anna Boukes, who lived on a small farm in Nijemirdum. Gosse and Anna headed a large, devout Reformed Christian family. They could barely make ends meet themselves yet they made Aron feel very welcome in their home. Gosse used to say to Aron: "Listen, boy. I have seven children and you are my number eight." Aron was permitted to help the other family members with their work in the fields whenever he wanted to. If he wished to go further afield, the Boukeses' eldest son accompanied him for reasons of security. Gosse and Anna realized that they were taking enormous risks but their steadfst religious beliefs motivated them to help persecuted Jews. Even though they had very limited financial resources, they never expected any financial compensation for sheltering a growing teenager. On the contrary, during the hunger winter of 1944--1945, the Boukes even sent food package to Aron's family in Amsterdam whenever possible. On March 9, 1994, Yad Vashem recognized Gosse Boukes and his wife, Anna Boukes-van Dijk, as Righteous Among the Nations.
