The Boumans lived in Zutphen, Gelderland, during the German occupation and Frederik Bouman became the leader of a local underground group. He would break into government offices to steal ration cards for the many people who were hiding out from the German and Dutch police. One such family was Emanuel and Marianne Krukziener and their two children, Nico and Bram, whom he provided with ration cards during the two difficult years that they hid with the de Swart* family in Zutphen, from October 1942 until September 1944. While hiding the Jewish family, Jacobus de Swart, who worked for the Dutch Railways Authority, the NS, joined the underground after participating in the railroad strike in protest against the Germans. This increased the danger of the Krukzieners' being caught, so they had to find another hiding place. Thus, Frederik Bouman, accompanied by armed members of the underground on bicycles, moved them to the Voskamp* family farm. The Voskamps were also members of the underground and their house was used as an underground operations center. The Krukzieners hid with them for six weeks, until it became too dangerous and once again they had to find another hiding place. This time they were moved to a friend of the Voskamps, Willem Frederik Kabbes*, hidding there for six months, until the liberation in May 1945. According to various testimonies, Frederik Bouman was a courageous and bold individual and singlehandedly responsible for saving the Krukziener family. Throughout the entire time, he worried about escape routes for them, found places for them to hide, and got them the ration cards that were so valuable in those days---and all under constant risk to his life and the life of his family. His many brave deeds were done not for financial reward but out of his humanitarian principles.
On June 30, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Frederik Hendrik Bouman and his wife, Gezina Hendrika Helena Lammina Bouman-Offereins, as Righteous Among the Nations.
