In August 1942, members of the Overduin* group provided Dr. Joseph Menko and his wife, Betty-Johanna Menko, with the address of the Braakman family in Enschede, Overijssel. Hendrik Braakman was a driver who earned very little money, but he still welcomed the couple into the relative safety of his home. Hendrik and his family were driven solely by humanitarian motives. The Menkos stayed with the Braakmans until the end of the war. In the meantime, Albert and Maria Wesselius* were hiding their baby daughter. During their time in hiding, the Reverend Overduin often visited the fugitives and provided them with ration cards, potatoes, and money towards their upkeep.
On July 7, 1973, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrik Marinus Cornelis Braakman, his wife, Fenna Gesina Aleida Braakman-Schouwink, and their children, Marie Gesina Jantine Muntenaar-Braakman and Ferdinand Jan Braakman, as Righteous Among the Nations.
