In February 1943, 16-year-old Marianne Reiss’s hiding place became unsafe and she had to find yet another address. Equipped only with a note she had received from an underground member who was the father of a former classmate, Marianne was sent to Johanna Breel-Marmelstein’s house in Bussum, North Holland. Even though Johanna had never met the girl who knocked on her door, she received her with open arms and looked after her until May 1944. Johanna was a widow who had no children and, as a devout Christian, saw it as her God-given duty to save Marianne from the certain death that awaited her if discovered. While in hiding, Johanna took care of all of Marianne’s needs, sharing the food she received on her ration card. No one could know about Marianne’s presence and so she remained indoors all the time and hid when people came to visit or a house search was imminent. Johanna prepared a secret hiding place under the house that Marianne entered through a hole in the kitchen floor. Marianne survived the war and stayed in touch with Johanna even after she immigrated to Israel.
On March 25, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Johanna Philipina Breel-Marmelstein as Righteous Among the Nations.
