In May 1943, 25-year-old Anton van Dam* risked his life by going to Amsterdam to fetch the Cohen family (Nisan, Rosa, and their four children, Shaul, Lea, Mirjam, and Mordechai). Anton temporarily hid the Cohens in his own home until he managed to arrange hiding places for them elsewhere. After the eldest son, Shaul, had been forced to move out of several places, he was eventually taken to the home of Pieter (Piet) and Jaan Brobbel on his eighth birthday, May 26, 1943. The Brobbels lived in the tiny village of Zwartewaal, South Holland. Piet and Jaan had two children, a three-year-old and an infant. A third child was born while Shaul was hiding with them. Shaul was given the name Wim van der Berg, supposedly being an orphan whose parents had been killed in the 1940 bombardment of Rotterdam. The Brobbels took good care of the young fugitive, treating him like one of their own children. They provided him with all the love and security that he needed. Shaul remained with the Brobbel family until the end of the war. Piet was deeply involved with underground activities to the extent that he occasionally had to go into hiding himself, such as during the infamous hunger winter of 1944--1945. During this period the Germans rounded up all the men in the village in search of underground activists. Later on in the war, when the Germans flooded the countryside because they feared an Allied invasion, a number of displaced persons also found shelter in the Brobbels' home. Despite the danger, Jaan and Piet never considered moving Shaul elsewhere. After the liberation, the Brobbels returned Shaul to his parents.
On September 10, 1974, Yad Vashem recognized Pieter Brobbel and his wife, Jaan Brobbel-Eland, as Righteous Among the Nations.
