Alida (Ali) van der Broek, or the angel as one of the children whom she helped would call her, was a handicrafts teacher in Voorthuizen, Gelderland, and a member of the Resistance. As such, she quickly spotted the children in her classes who needed protection from the Nazis. Ali approached Edna Hoisler, an Austrian-Jewish student of hers and offered to help the girl and her family. She found hiding places for Edna, her mother, her grandmother, and her uncle. She did not leave it at that, but kept in close contact to check that all was well and found alternative addresses when their situation became unsafe. Ali also hid a Jewish family, the Sliers, in her own house, without telling any of her relatives. In 1944, Ali was arrested and incarcerated in Arnhem from January 17 until May; in the Vught camp from May until September 7, 1944; and at Ravensbrück until April 1945. When she was liberated, she was suffering from an advanced case of tuberculosis and was taken by the International Red Cross to Sweden to recuperate. In September 1945, she was repatriated but her health remained poorly and she was sent to a sanitarium in Davos, Switzerland, from which she returned fully recovered in December 1947. Ali never received any remuneration for her Resistance work. She acted out of a deep sense of justice and a love of humanity.
On April 28, 1968, Yad Vashem recognized Alida Gijsbertha van der Broek as Righteous Among the Nations.
