During the war, Harm and Aaltje Broenink saved Jews from persecution in Nieuwlande, Drenthe. This information is based on the testimony of Arnold Douwes*, the initiator and indefatigable organizer of the project for hiding Jews in the area, and Nico (Max LĂ©ons), a young Jew from Voorburg, South Holland, who was his faithful assistant. Between 1943 and 1945, Douwes kept a diary in which he mentioned Harm and Aaltje among the people who helped hide Jews.
On June 9, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Harm Broenink and his wife, Aaltje Broenink-Strijker, as Righteous Among the Nations.
