Lya Meijers (later Frank) was taken by bicycle to the house of Dr. Hugo Broers and his wife, Kathy, in Amersfoort, Utrecht, by Wilhelmina van Hilten*. Wilhelmina's husband, Jan van Hilten*, was a colleague of Lya's father and had taken it upon himself to secure hiding places for the entire Meijers family. Hugo and Kathy Broers had two little girls of their own and treated Lya like a third daughter. If anyone asked about her, they were told that she was a refugee from the bombed city of Rotterdam. When an inquisitive servant began asking too many questions she was dismissed from the household. Since Hugo had his office in the house, Lya was at risk of being seen by visiting patients. The family tried to keep her away from prying eyes but questions were asked a number of times. The little girl was not allowed on the street and could only play in the yard. On several occasions, the Germans came to search the house and Hugo had to flee with Lya. On February 15, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Dr. Hugo Broers and his wife, Kathy Broers-van der Mijll-Dekker, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
