Wilma Grünfeld-van Dam was three months pregnant when she and her husband, Hans, decided to go into hiding in August 1942. They found refuge with Mrs. van Stempvoort, a former nurse, who lived in Plasmolen, Limburg. Stempvoort had worked at a sanitarium in nearby Gennep, where she brought Wilma to give birth to her daughter on February 28, 1943. Hearing that a Jewish baby had been illegally delivered at the sanitarium, the Germans arrested the chief of the medical staff, Dr. Albert Daan, who was released a week later. The young parents and their new child, Joyce, had managed to disappear and the other patients were quickly sent home so that they would not give anything away under interrogation. One of those patients, Jo Bruinsma, offered to help hide the Grünfelds at the house of her brother and sister-in-law in Drachten, Friesland. In April 1943, Hans and Wilma left Plasmolen armed with fake documents and went to the home of Fedde and Lim Bruinsma, where they stayed until May 1945. Baby Joyce was taken by the Resistance to the home of Dr. Jonkers* and his family in Tiel, Gelderland. In case of a raid, the Bruinsmas dug out a pit beneath the house where the refugees could conceal themselves. Despite the frequent German searches on the property, Hans and Wilma were never found. Normally, the Grünfelds stayed in an upstairs room during the daytime and only one neighbor and a physician were aware of their existence.
On July 16, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Fedde Bruinsma, his wife, Lim Bruinsma-Veenstra, and his sister, Jo Bruinsma, as Righteous Among the Nations.
