Thus, on October 22, 1942, Jan collected three-year-old Mary de Vries, born in Neede, from Reverend Leendert Overduin*. Apart from a brief period during which Mary was transferred to another address because the Buijzes feared a house search was imminent, she remained in their home until the end of the war. Jan worked in a textile factory and his income was modest. Overduins underground organization therefore gave the Buijzes 30 flroin each month. During the autumn of 1941, after a razzia in Enschede, Albert Laufer, a colleague of Jans, often sought temporary shelter in Jans home. On February 1, 1943, Jan drove Albert on his bike to the train that was to take him to Switzerland. Jan and Albert Laufer kept in contact until September 1944. During this time, Jan delivered money and food coupons to Alberts mother, Selma Laufer-Neumann, who hid at various different addresses. During the course of the war, Jan and Elisabeth also helped Dine de Jong-Slager and Mimi Hartog, who both stayed in the Buijzes home on several occasions. On October 25, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Jan Abraham Buijze and his wife, Elisabeth Anna Buijze-Schouten, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
