Jacob was brought to the van der Burghs by Gerhardus van der Lugt*, Johannes's uncle. Johannes and Johanna had two young sons, and they received Jacob warmly. Jacob was always happy in the van der Burghs' home, where he had his own small bedroom, although he was only allowed to leave the house in the evenings for a brief walk. As he could not attend school, Johannes and Johanna taught him most of the school subjects at home and provided him with books. On Sundays, Jacob attended church with his foster family. Until June 1943, when they were deported, Jacob's parents paid the van der Burghs a negligible amount of money. Even after this payment ceased, Jacob continued to be treated as an equal member of the family. Jacob was a very musical child and Johannes and Johanna made an effort to give him a musical education. The van der Burghs arranged for the organist Willem Hubert to give Jacob a half-hour lesson each week. During his time in hiding with the van der Burghs, Jacob was sent temporarily to almost 20 other addresses when house searches were expected, but he always returned to the van der Burghs after the danger had subsided. After the war Jacob expressed his gratitude to the van der Burgh family and to his music teacher, who all risked their lives for him. According to the wishes of his parents, expressed before they were deported, Jacob and his brother became the foster children of the van der Lughts. On October 28, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes van der Burgh and his wife, Johanna Jacoba Maria van der Burgh-Sleijster, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
