During the war, Fred L. Polak and his three children, including an infant, were hidden for several years with the assistance of two women: C. J. van der Gon-Netscher* and M. G. F. Buys, “especially Mrs. Buys, a first-class social worker who by virtue of her profession was the right woman in the right place with regard to organization under the circumstances,” wrote C. J. van der Gon-Netscher’s son. Fred survived the years of occupation with the help of these women and Edwina Moor* (later his wife) and even managed to complete his doctoral thesis during this time. He received his Ph.D soon after the war. Fred and his family maintained contact with their rescuers from the end of the war until their deaths.
On March 31, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Mrs. M. G. F. Buys as Righteous Among the Nations.
