Karel and Hendrika Brouwer, a recently married couple, were members of the TD group (Tweede Distributie) during the war. Karel was an official in the municipality of Leusden, Utrecht. After the Germans realized that the first ration cards were easy to forge they modified them to make falsification a far more difficult process. In doing so, the Germans hoped to force many Jews out of hiding due to a lack of food. In response to this measure, Karel, in collaboration with Professor Adolph Hendriks*, the head of the TD group, devised a way to forge the new ration cards. Besides this dangerous endeavor, Karel and Hendrika also hid seven Jews in their small house for various periods of time, among them H. Theeboom, and helped 21 others by providing them with false identity cards and ration coupons.
On February 11, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Karel Brouwer and his wife, Hendrika B. Brouwer-de Voogd, as Righteous Among the Nations.
