Adrianus (Jan) and Elisabeth (Lisa) Dahmen joined the Resistance in 1941. Jan acted as the contact in Roermond, Limburg, for C. Paasen, who headed a group working to rescue Jews. The Dahmens themselves hid at least five Jews, found hiding places for many others, and distributed civilian clothing to foreign pilots. On June 6, 1944, the Germans apprehended Jan, Lisa, and two Jews who had been hiding with them. After two days, Lisa was released. She returned home and immediately continued to take care of the fugitives still hiding in her home as well as her seven children. Lisa tried everything possible to secure her husband's freedom, but on August 19, 1944, Lisa's 34th birthday, he was shot. After the war, President Eisenhower and the Air Chief Marshal of the British Commonwealth honored Jan and Lisa Dahmen.
On November 1, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Adrianus Johannes Dahmen and his wife, Elisabeth Anna Maria Dahmen-Ottenheym, as Righteous Among the Nations.
