In March 1943, the constabulory of Grootegast, Groningen, and the surrounding villages refused to comply with an order to arrest seven Jews. One of those who refused was Jan Deddens, born in ’t Zandt and living in Grootegast. He was punished by being imprisoned for a year in the Vught concentration camp and was then sent to Germany as a prisoner of war. Shortly after the German capitulation he was repatriated. Sergeant Dirk Boonstra*, who initiated the collective refusal, perished in Dachau.
On November 14, 1988 Yad Vashem recognized Jan Deddens as Righteous Among the Nations.
