Aart was a courier for the underground, distributing money, confidential documents, and food cards. Despite the fact that their house was small and they could hide Jews only for short periods, there were times when there were several Jews in one room for several weeks. From September 1942, the Delfgous hid a Jewish girl named Mia Schuitevoerder, who came to them through her parents’ housekeeper. Mia stayed with them until the liberation and they treated her lkie their child and as a sister to their son, who was ten years older than she, sharing the meager amount of food they had. They told the neighbors she was an orphan who had lost her parents in the Rotterdam bombardment. In Mia’s testimony to Yad Vashem, she recalled that “the Delfgou family did this out of love, certainly not for money.” On January 12, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Aart Delfgou and his wife, Aaltje Delfgou-van Bokhorst, as Righteous Among the Nations.
