The Cohen family lived in one room and never left the house. According to the daughter, Annie (Kalmann)-Cohen, her father paid a specific sum for food and for the rental of the one room. Their presence put the Dijs family at great risk because they had no papers. The motive for the actions of the Dijs family, and the mother, Aaltje, in particular, was not a religious one. They believed that Jews had to be saved despite the risk. After the war, Mr. Cohen gave money to Aaltje, who was widowed and looking after her crippled son. However, this was insignificant in comparison to the great risk she ran by hiding them, which involved lying to neighbors, relatives, and shopkeepers, who wanted to know why the family was buying almost double the amount of food. In her testimony to Yad Vashem, Annie wrote: “Several times, the Germans entered her home searching for us but we were so well hidden that they did not find us. We were lucky.” On December 10, 1972, Yad Vashem recognized Aaltje Dijs-ten Brink as Righteous Among the Nations.
