When the decrees against the Jews were issued, Vles was forced to resign and they went their separate ways. They met again by chance and Gerrit implored Fred to hide with him and not to report for deportation. Fred Vles and his wife, Philippine Sophie, who had two children, aged three and one and a half, refused to hide because they did not wish to endanger the lives of those hiding them. Gerrit continued to plead with them, at least to hide their children. The Vles couple eventually gave in and the elder son, Joost, was taken by the UKC* to the Dagnelie* family. The younger child, Paul, who was hidden elsewhere, died after becoming ill. Joost returned to his parents after the war. After the two boys had gone into hiding with their friends, Fred and his wife remained at home in Den Bosch, desperate. They had been prepared to be deported but then regretted it at the last minute and contacted the Dils. Gerrit came to get them. After about four weeks the doorbell rang and two Dutch policemen came in to search the house. Luckily, one of them had warned Gerrit before the search and he had immediately moved Fred and Philippine to another, safer hiding place where they stayed for several months, until they were forced to leave. After they had hidden in several places, sometimes together and sometimes apart, the Vles couple contacted the Dils again. Fred and Philippine stayed with the Dil family, who had three young children, from October 1942, with a break of ten months, until the liberation. The couples maintained their friendship for many years. On October 25, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Gerrit Dil and his wife, Ruth Dil-Ohm, as Righteous Among the Nations.
