Jacobus Dommisse, an engineer who held a senior position at a gas factory in Rotterdam, and his wife Adriana, a pharmacist, hid a young Jewish woman named Elsa C. Cosman, whom they had met through a mutual friend when Elsa worked as a pharmacist in Amsterdam. The Dommisses had a small apartment with a living room, two bedrooms, and another small spare room in an apartment block where there were six other apartments. Else lived in the spare room without anyone in the building knowing it, from June 20, 1942, until the liberation. A few of Jacobus’s and Adriana’s friends and family knew they were hiding a Jewish woman in their home, but no one knew her real identity. Elsa added a small sum to the family’s budget towards living expenses and a mutual friend of Elsa’s and the Dommisses provided food cards.
On March 19, 1985, Yad Vashem recognized Jacobus Pieter Dommisse and his wife, Adriana Elizabeth Dommisse-de Quaatsteniet, as Righteous Among the Nations.
