Arie Don helped hide Jews together with Gerrit Don* (no relation), his contact, who, like Arie, worked at Lever Brothers, in the soap industry in Vlaardingen, South Holland. In this town, there were 17 non-Jewish families who between them saved 50 Jews. Arie and his wife, Johanna, hid two Jewish women, a lawyer named Hartog and Bloeme Swaluw, who had previously been hidden in the hospital by her Jewish doctor, Dr. Hausdorf, who himself was later hidden by Gerrit Don’s group. Bloeme came to Arie and Johanna through Marinus Post* and stayed with them from January to the end of April 1944. The Dons kept in contact with Bloeme Dickhoff-Swaluw even after they moved to Australia and Bloeme and her husband immigrated to Switzerland.
On May 23, 1979, Yad Vashem recognized Arie Don and his wife, Johanna Don, as Righteous Among the Nations.
