Miriam Winter, born in Dusseldorf in 1922, was a refugee in Eindhoven, North Brabant. She was there with her parents and sister until 1942, when she went into hiding. Initially, the Olofsen* and the Stavast* families hid Miriam in Eindhoven itself. However, her neighbors, members of the NSB, recognized her and consequently Miriam was forced to flee to a more distant shelter where she would be unknown. For a while she wandered from one family to another, remaining in each place for only a short time. Then, like many others, she found a more permanent hideout in Sevenum, Limburg. Her parents had also found refuge in Sevenum, with the Willemssen* family. For the first two or three months of her stay in Sevenum, the Donders family hid Miriam. The Donderses, a family with three young children, lived in an area of Sevenum called Kronenberg. Maria was an exceptionally kind “hostess,” but nevertheless the situation was especially precarious and did not allow for Miriam to remain with the family for too long. After leaving the Donderses, Piet Arts* organized for Miriam to seek refuge with the Schreurs*.
On February 10, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Gerard Hubert Donders and his wife, Maria Hendrika Donders-Huys, as Righteous Among the Nations.
