Frans and Louise van Dooren and their many children lived in the village of Sevenum, Limburg, and ran a small farm. They hid Sara and Herman van Buren, a Jewish couple, for seven months from October 1943 until May 1944. Sara and Herman had succeeded in avoiding arrest by the Grüne Polizei in Amsterdam and had fled the city but were “wanted” by the Germans. Although frequent searches for hidden Jews were conducted in the region where the van Doorens lived, Frans and Louise hid the Jewish couple in their house or in their fields. When Sara van Buren became ill with dyptheria, which is infectious, Frans and Louise (Wies) called in a doctor and took care of her until she recovered. Frans and Louise were people of modest means. They saved Jews for religious and humanatarian reasons and not for financial compensation.
On December 28, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized H. Frans van Dooren and his wife, Louise van Dooren-Keijzers, as Righteous Among the Nations.
