Before the German occupation, Franciscus (Frans) and Henrica van Dun had known some of the members of the Jewish community in Tilburg, North Brabant, including Dr. Henri Moerel, who was their doctor. When, in 1942, the situation of these Jews deteriorated, the van Duns offered to hide Henri's two small sons in their home and found a hiding place for their parents. They were not the only ones rescued by the van Duns: the Gersons-Jacobs family, father, mother, and child, stayed with Frans and Henrica for a short time until a safer place was found. However, the van Duns' home became dangerous after their names were found on a list uncovered during a German search of the home of fellow Resistance member Coba Pulsken, who had hidden four English pilots. Luckily, Frans managed to move the boys and when, at four a.m.on the same night the SS, assisted by the NSB, came to get the Jews they found only the van Duns and their sleeping children, Wim and Marriette. The children were asked about the Jewish boys but did not say a word. After the search, the van Duns themselves were forced to hide for a few weeks in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, they were not able to warn the Moerels to find a safer place to hide and the Moerels were arrested and deported on the last transport from Westerbork to Auschwitz. Henri Moerel said of the van Duns that: "they had a great deal of courage and helped people whenever they could." During the war, the van Duns were members of a large group of Resistance activists in Tilburg and its environs which rescued 175 Jews.
On June 7, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Franciscus Hubertus Josephus van Dun and his wife, Henrica Wilhelmina Maria van Dun-Mols, as Righteous Among the Nations.
