Hanneke Denneboom was six years old when unknown persons fetched her from her parents' home and took her to a hideout. From there, she was moved to a second and then a third address until, in the spring of 1944, a pastor brought her to a meeting place in Moddergat, Friesland, where Nutte and Reinou Cuperus picked her up. Her foster parents, a newlywed couple, spread the rumor that the little girl had been sent to them because of the food shortage in Amsterdam. Hanneke attended school like every other child in the region and since she did not look Jewish no one suspected anything. Nevertheless, Nutte and Reinou prepared a hiding place for her in case the situation became more precarious. "I wish to declare that Mr. and Mrs. Cuperus have been a real father and mother, who even managed to turn this miserable period into a pleasant one for me," Mrs. Hanneke Rijkmans-Denneboom wrote in her testimony to Yad Vashem.
On June 13, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Nutte Cuperus and his wife, Reinou Cuperus-de Jong, as Righteous Among the Nations.
