As the two became more acquainted with each other, Mrs. Teeboom told Tine about her worries for the Jews of the Netherlands, for their safety in the future, and more specifically for her own family. Hearing this story, Tines mother, Hendrikje, told Rebecca that she could count on her if ever needed. And so, in the late summer of 1942, Rebeccas six-year-old Sonja (later, Verbeek, born May 4, 1936), was taken to the van Daalen home to hide. Hendrikje van Daalen, a widow, and living in Heemstede, close to Haarlem, was in her late fifties. Three of her children were still living at home, the youngest 18 years old. A son was hiding in Friesland in order to avoid forced labor in Germany. Hendrikje was a Calvinist, believing it to be her religious duty to help. Sonja, whose age bracket did not fit the family composition, was presented as a distant relative, but received into the household as if she was their own child. She called Hendrikje, Oma, and the van Daalen daughters, Tante. Sonja was allowed to go to school. A few times, Sonja was taken to Drachten in the eastern part of the country, to one of the married daughters of Hendrikje. She also went along for visits to another daughter who lived close by Haarlem. There were moments of increased fear, especially during a house search on the Hendrikjes birthday in December, when Sonja quickly hid behind a harmonium instrument and sat mouse-still. The Dutch collaborator who did the search was told that only women were living in the house, so that there was no need to search further for men who were dodging forced labor. Sonja stayed with Hendrikje van Daalen until the liberation of the area in May 1945. It then turned out that her parents Rebecca and Max Teeboom had been murdered in 1943 in Auschwitz. Sonja grew up under an uncles care. On August 14, 2011, Yad Vashem recognized Hendrikje van Daalen-Terpstra as Righteous Among the Nations. |
