The Karpowitzes settled in The Hague, where they had two more children. When the war broke out the family relocated inland to Bilthoven, Utrecht. There they met Judge Delinus Visser, his wife, Jo, and their two daughters, Suzanne and Lena. In 1942, Ellen's father was arrested and deported to Poland. Shortly afterwards the rest of the family decided to go into hiding. Ellen's younger brother was already in relative safety; Ellen, her mother, and her sister found themselves separate hiding places. The Visser family offered Ellen a shelter in their home, where she was hidden in the attic. She was rarely allowed to come downstairs and the attic door was kept locked at all times. There was a large trunk in the attic into which Ellen could climb in times of house searches. One such search took place and she was not discovered. Before they returned, Lena smuggled Ellen out into the heath behind the house. The police took in 18-year-old Lena for questioning but she gave nothing way and was released the following day. It became too dangerous for Ellen to stay at the Vissers so Jo asked her maid, Geertruide van der Haar*, to hide Ellen for awhile, and she agreed. On January 22, 1992, Yad Vashem recognized Delinus Visser, his wife, Johanna Catharina Visser-Pelt, and their daughter, Lena Catharina Visser, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
