They decided to go into hiding instead. Wim contacted a friend whose father had connections with the national Dutch Teachers Union. This friend found Bea a hiding place with the Lelyveld* family in The Hague and Wim was sent to the home of Antje Molenaar-Wiersma (later Treurniet). A month before Wims arrival, Antje, a teacher with two children, also from The Hague, had been informed that her first husband, Jan, had died in Mauthausen. Antje was a member of the The Hague Free Groups (see Weerheijm*, Louis and Johanna). Wim stayed with Antje for a short while until he moved to the home of Johanna de Boer-Koeman*. In the summer of 1942, Antje afforded shelter to Jolan Baum (later Strumpfmann) of Rotterdam, whose husband had been apprehended earlier that year. With a false identity card in the name of Justina Pulki, Jolan went to The Hague ostensibly to work for Antje as a housekeeper. Only Antjes in-laws and Jans sister knew Jolans real identity. Jolan stayed with Antje until the end of the war. She only left the house for about three weeks, when the Baum children, who had been hiding in Driebergen, Utrecht, were betrayed and Jolan was moved temporarily to the Weerheijms home to be safe. On June 3, 1982, Yad Vashem recognized Antje Treurniet-Wiersma as Righteous Among the Nations. |
