Their elder son, Renicus, was studying in Delft at the Technical University. Once a week, the couple went to the Apeldoorn Bridge Club, where they became acquainted with Marcus and Seraphine van Son, a Jewish couple. In October 1942, the van Sons and their 23-year-old son, Salomon, and 17-year-old daughter, Emmy, left home in search of a place to hide. After wandering for some time between hiding places, they were eventually taken in by the Hermanides family, in early 1943. Seraphine and Emmy remained there; Marcus and Salomon moved on to other addresses. In the spring of 1943, Renicus was among the students who refused to sign a pledge of allegiance to the German occupiers and he had to go into hiding. His parents' home was no longer safe and so the two van Son women had to find a new hideout. Maria Hermanides secured them a safe shelter with the van der Zaal family, who lived across the street. After Renicus was sent to Germany in June 1943, the Hermanideses took in Marcus van Son and his son Salomon. In the summer of 1944, they took in Seraphine van Son too. Emmy remained with the van der Zaals. The van Sons were given quarters of their own on the second floor, consisting of a living room, bedroom, bathroom, and an attic room for Salomon. In addition to hiding Jews, the Hermanideses also cooperated with the neighbors opposite them by hiding weapons. In November 1944, the fugitives survived a raid in the neighborhood thanks to Maria Hermanides's presence of mind. Nevertheless, things began to go wrong soon after and on January 6, 1945, the SD surrounded the house, discovered the hidden Jews, and arrested everyone on the premises. Suffridus Hermanides and Charlotte were not at home at the time. The prisoners were taken to SD headquarters in Apeldoorn, where Seraphine was interrogated and beaten. The van Sons were sent to Westerbork on January 25, and, soon after, Maria Hermanides was also sent there. In early April 1945, just before the Canadian army reached the camp, the Germans evacuated the non-Jewish Resistance fighters to the environs of the city of Groningen. Maria Hermanides and the van Son family were liberated separately in April 1945. On February 23, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Suffridus Renicus Hermanides and his wife, Maria Antonia Sara Wilhelmina Hermanides-Haagmans, and Albertus van der Zaal and his wife, Jacomina van der Zaal-Smit as Righteous Among the Nations. |
