In the summer of 1943, they moved with their four children to Beetsterzwaag, Friesland. Jetze was active in the Resistance and his principal task was finding families willing to hide Jews. This was an especially risky task because it involved personally approaching people who might betray him. The Heidingas were motivated to perform these dangerous acts out of love for their fellow human beings and their sympathy for the Jews. On March 1, 1943, Jetze found a hiding place for Fieke (Tsofia) Asscher with the Heida* family in Beetsterzwaag. Later that year, in the summer, Fieke spent six weeks in the Heidingas home, during which time Jetze found shelter for Isaac Asscher, Fiekes brother, with the van Bruggens* in a nearby village. The Nazis later arrested Isaac and he perished in Auschwitz. Flory Asscher-Tal, a sister-in-law of Isaac and Fieke, survived the war hidden with the Heidingas. Fieke returned to the Heidas but was relocated when her brother was arrested. She also survived the war. On March 19, 1987, Yad Vashem recognized the Reverend Jetze Heidinga and his wife, Maria Clazina Heidinga-Voogd, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
