In March 1943, the constabulary of Grootegast, Groningen, and the surrounding villages refused to obey an order to arrest seven Jews. One of those who refused was Tjerk van der Hauw of Opende, Friesland, who was punished for his refusal by deportation to the Vught concentration camp, where he spent 18 months. He was released in August 1944. Police sergeant Dirk Boonstra*, who had initiated the collective refusal, perished in Dachau.
On November 14, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Tjerk van der Hauw as Righteous Among the Nations.
