Jan, born in Zuidwolle (Drenthe), was Arnold Douwes’s eldest brother and a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church, serving in Den Bosch, North Brabant. He and his wife, Nicoline, born in Leiden, hid five Jews in their home during the course of the war. Over and above this, from his pulpit he would remind his congregation of their moral duties toward their fellow human beings.
On June 9, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Rev. Jan Douwes and his wife, Nicoline Henriëtte Douwes-van Doesburgh, as Righteous Among the Nations.
