Gerda had false identity papers and used the name Nancy. Although she did not reveal her true identity to the Fabers until after the war, they were fully aware that the nanny of their four children was Jewish. A few months after I had come to live with the Fabers, Gerda Mosse-Bloch wrote in her testimony to Yad Vashem, the SD searched the house for Jews. That night, fearing a return of the SD, the entire Faber family, including me, moved to an isolated cottage owned by a friend, near Doornspijk, Gelderland. The risks they took were now greater than ever because the Nazis were on their heels. Despite this, at no time did the Reverend or Mrs. Faber ask me to leave. For the following two years, I lived in hiding with them in this cottage. Their courageous behavior can only be explained by their strong humanitarian desire to help people in danger. At the end of the war, Gerda and her sister, Doris, were reunited. Their parents had been murdered in Auschwitz. When Gerda moved into a home of her own, the Fabers invited Doris, whom they saw at the grammar school, to live with them. During the course of the war, apart from sheltering Gerda, the Fabers also hid a number of other fugitives, Jewish and non-Jewish, for shorter periods of time. On February 9, 1993, Yad Vashem recognized the Reverend Adriaan Faber and his wife, Anna Dorothea Henriette Faber-Chabot, as Righteous Among the Nations. |
