Gerardus (Harrie) Hanssen was one of the main leaders of the Dutch underground in Sevenum, Limburg, and was principally involved in finding hiding places. He worked together with Piet Arts* and Gerardus Franciscus Oirbans* to save Jews in Sevenum and the surrounding villages and risked his life in doing so. Harrie made contact with the Westerweel* group and together with it transferred Jews to hiding places in Sevenum. He also provided many hidden Jews with food coupons and money as he served as the treasurer of the local underground. Much of the money came from the Catholic Church and during the last months of the war in Northern Limburg, funds came from the NSF. During the course of the war, Harrie found refuge for Jews at his parents’ home as well as at other places. Nol Drielsma was among the over 100 Jews who hid in Sevenum and were helped by Harrie. She was hidden with Harrie’s family for a number of weeks until a permanent hideout was found for him on a farm. Harrie also hid two Jewish families, the Bloemendaals and the Gruenewalds, who were sent to him by Gerardus Oirbans. Sophie Nussbaum (later Shulamith Ya’ari) was another Jew who was hidden in Sevenum and helped by Harrie. She hid in the home of Hendrik and Geraldina van den Goor* from December 1943 until November 1944. Through his contacts with the local police, Harrie provided Sophie with an original identity card under a false name, claiming that she had lost hers. Thanks to Dr. Charles Auguste le Lorraine, who treated for her when she fell ill with tuberculosis, as did many other people in hiding, and the efforts of Harrie, Sophie survived the war.
On June 07, 1984, Yad Vashem recognized Gerardus Hendrikus Hanssen as Righteous Among the Nations.
