Rescue Story
Imthorn, Johannes & Maria Elisabeth (Juhr) Johannes Imthorn was a carpenter and his wife, Maria, was a housewife in the town of Noordwijk, South Holland. In August 1944, a Jewish couple, Sara and Herman van Buren, contacted the Westerweel* group and asked for help to flee Holland and to reach Spain through Belgium and France. When this plan did not work out, they were taken to the Imthorns. The Germans then ordered all the inhabitants of the town to leave their homes and move inland, away from the coast. The Imthorns obeyed, moving to nearby Warmond and taking Sara and Herman with them. The evacuees’ living conditions were extremely primitive. They were starving and there was little wood for fuel in the harsh winter of 1944--1945. One day the two men were working in the yard when they saw two German soldiers approaching. Herman immediately went into the house and hid in the shelter. The soldiers knocked on the door and asked where the young man whom they had seen a minute ago in the yard had gone. Maria insisted stubbornly that there was no one in the house and the soldiers eventually left without searching it. On December 28, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Johannes Imthorn and his wife, Maria Elisabeth Imthorn-Juhr, as Righteous Among the Nations.
