Rescue Story
Boone de, Emma (Janssen)
Leendert and Betty van Rooij had gone into hiding in May 1943 and, by 1945, had hidden in numerous places. However, in January of that year it became nearly impossible to find yet another hiding place in the small community of Gorssel, Gelderland. Then Emma (Ems) de Boone offered them refuge in her home, and Leendert and Betty remained with her until the end of the war. D. Sanders, a lawyer from Zwolle, also stayed there for a while. Ems refused to take any money for their upkeep and shared everything with those hiding in her house, despite the trying times. She and her husband, Wim de Boone, risked their lives out of concern for their fellow man and their anti-Nazi convictions. It was especially dangerous for Ems to shelter Jews since Wim had been caught by the SS and imprisoned in Deventer as a member of the underground. He was executed in May 1945, just before the liberation of Holland. When Yad Vashem decided to honor Ems de Boone she wrote: I only did my duty and would do it again if necessary.
On July 6, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Emma de Boone-Janssen as Righteous Among the Nations.
