Rescue Story
Boon, Aafke Adriana In July 1942, Frederika Boasson, a young woman, received a summons to report for labor in the East. She panicked and turned to her friends for help. They contacted Dr. de Leeuw, deputy director of the Valerius Kliniek, who decided that Frederika should immediately be admitted to his clinic for safekeeping. Ten days later she was placed in the care of Aafke Boon, a psychiatrist at the clinic. After a few months Aafke succeeded in transferring Frederika to a safer room on the top floor of the clinic that gave her privacy. In early 1943 Aafke managed to convince Frederika to leave the hospital and she found her a new hiding place in Utrecht. It turned out that Frederika left the clinic just in time, only a short while before the Germans deported all Jewish patients in psychiatric institutions. Frederika was eventually liberated in Maastricht. On March 31, 1981, Yad Vashem recognized Aafke Adriana Boon as Righteous Among the Nations.
