Albertus Bohlmeijer was employed by the NSDM at the Amsterdam shipyard where Abraham Wittenburg was the company physician. When measures against the Jews intensified, Albertus, who had married in 1941, told Abraham that he and his wife, Nancy, were willing to hide his son, Jaap Wessel, born in 1939, should it become necessary. In preparation for the inevitable, the Wittenburgs occasionally sent their son to visit the Bohlmeijers so he could get acquainted with them. At the end of 1942, three-year-old Jaap went into hiding with Albertus and Nancy in their small apartment in the center of Amsterdam. No financial arrangements were made; the Bohlmeijers were acting out of human compassion. Since their neighbors knew that the couple was childless, it was very difficult for them to explain the sudden appearance of the boy without arousing suspicion. Thus, when Jaap’s parents went into hiding elsewhere, Albertus and Nancy moved with Jaap to the southern part of the city, where they could introduce the boy to people as their own child. They treated him like their own, bestowed love and lavished care upon him, and he called them “momma” and “poppa.” In January 1945, Nancy gave birth to their first child. Jaap hid with the Bohlmeijers until the end of the war, when his father came to pick him up. Both of Jaap’s parents had been caught in their hiding place and deported to Auschwitz; only his father survived. The Wittenburgs and the Bohlmeijers subsequently remained in contact with each other.
On September 27, 1978, Yad Vashem recognized Albertus Hendrik Bohlmeijer and his wife, Nancy Johanna Bohlmeijer-Melis, as Righteous Among the Nations.
