Rescue Story
Boer de, Femmigje (Boessenkool) When the war broke out, Femmigje (Femmy) Boessenkool (later de Boer) was engaged. She lived with her parents on the Zwarte Pad in Dedemsvaart, Overijssel. In 1941, her fiancé was shot and killed. Femmy’s father was an invalid, but despite having to look after him and grieving for her fiancé she hid Hedwig Goldschmidt, a German Jew, in her home. Hedwig had fled from Frankfurt to the Netherlands and in January 1943 Mien Ruys had brought her to the Boessenkools’ family farm. Femmy took excellent care of Hedwig, who stayed on the farm until the end of the war. The local Resistance provided them with ration cards and other necessities. On February 12, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Femmigje de Boer-Boessenkool as Righteous Among the Nations.
