However, the father and daughter could not remain in the hotel for an extended period of time without being suspected by the Germans. Fortunately, Henry de Boer, the 19-year-old hotel cook, offered to help them. In February 1943, Henry took Elisabeth to his parents home, where she stayed until the end of the war. Henry and his 16-year-old brother, Sieben, worked for the Resistance. Their parents, Thijs and Hinke, hid Jews without ever asking for any reward. The Jews they hid all survived the war and Thijs and Hinke never stopped regarding Elisabeth as the daughter of their house. On July 17, 1989,Yad Vashem recognized Thijs de Boer and his wife, Hinke de Boer-Boersma, as Righteous Among the Nations.
